Sapa is Northern Vietnam's flagship mountain destination — a French-built hill town turned tourism hub at 1,500m elevation, surrounded by rice-terraced valleys of the H'mong, Dao, Giay, and Tay ethnic minorities. The town itself is compact (walkable in 30 minutes) but the draws are outside — Muong Hoa Valley treks, Cat Cat village, Silver Waterfall, and the Fansipan cable car to Indochina's highest peak (3,143m).
Access: most travelers arrive from Hanoi (315 km, 6h via CT05 expressway). Direct flight to Điện Biên is possible but inconvenient (still 4h drive onward). The overnight train from Hanoi drops you at Lao Cai station, 35 km and 50 minutes below Sapa by mountain road. Once in Sapa, a car is useful for reaching outlying villages (Ta Van, Lao Chai, Ta Phin, Heaven's Gate Pass) that are awkward by motorbike in bad weather.
Rocket Car Rentals does not operate a Sapa branch. We offer Hanoi → Sapa private transfer with our Hanoi fleet (return same driver 2-3 days later), plus Lao Cai station pickup if you prefer the overnight train. Self-drive from Hanoi is viable with an IDP; the last 30 km of mountain switchbacks are challenging in fog.

Driving in Sapa — what to know
Sapa driving notes:
- QL4D mountain road from Lao Cai to Sapa — 30 km, 50 minutes in clear weather, 75+ minutes in fog. Switchbacks every 200m. Engine-brake downhill.
- Fog Oct-Mar can cut visibility to 30m. If possible, schedule arrival/departure for midday when sun burns off low clouds.
- Snow + ice possible Jan-Feb above 1,800m — Fansipan cable car base road and O Quy Ho pass. Chains not required but sensible driving essential.
- Sapa town parking is tight Dec-Feb and Sep-Oct. Hotel valet (80,000-150,000 VND/night) recommended. Street parking has meters and camera enforcement.
- Mountain motorbikes — hill-tribe farmers on small bikes with heavy loads. Courtesy and patience.
- Altitude-sensitive travelers — Fansipan summit (3,143m) can cause mild AMS. Drink water, avoid alcohol first day.

Sapa's four seasons each have a specialty:
- Sep-Oct: peak season. Rice terrace harvest golden-yellow. Sky often clears after morning mist. Photography sweet spot. Book 2-3+ weeks ahead.
- Nov-Feb: cold and atmospheric. 0-15°C. Snow possible at Fansipan. Cloud-sea ("biển mây") most common in December. Fewer tourists, more intimate feel.
- Mar-May: spring blossoms. Plum and peach. 12-22°C, generally pleasant. Mid-season pricing.
- Jun-Aug: green and rainy. Monsoon afternoon thunderstorms. Beautiful paddies but trekking conditions wet.
Avoid Tết 2026 (Jan 29-Feb 4): town is crowded with domestic tourism, prices spike, heavy fog common.
