Hanoi is Vietnam's thousand-year-old capital and the base camp for Northern Vietnam tourism — Halong Bay, Sapa, Ninh Binh ("Halong on land"), Mai Chau, and the Ha Giang loop all start here. Unlike Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi has four distinct seasons, including a genuine cold winter (down to 10°C) that surprises travelers arriving with only summer clothes.
Renting a car in Hanoi makes sense for three audiences: international tourists doing multi-day Halong/Sapa trips, business travelers who need professional presentation, and expats based in Tay Ho or Ciputra who want weekend road-trip freedom. Taxi and Grab work well inside the city; they stop being competitive the moment you leave the Ring Road.
Rocket Car Rentals operates from Hoan Kiem / Old Quarter with fleet pre-positioned near Noi Bai Airport (HAN, 27 km north) for morning arrivals. Our driver pool is vetted for English fluency — every chauffeur passes a practical English test before taking foreign bookings. For self-drive clients, we verify your International Driving Permit and original license at pickup — no exceptions.

Top attractions in Hanoi
Most Hanoi rentals fall into four patterns. Each has a sweet-spot vehicle choice.
Old Quarter + city culture — Hoan Kiem Lake, Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison, French Quarter, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Typically a half-day (4h) chauffeur tour. Self-drive is strongly discouraged — the 36-street Old Quarter is a one-way maze, and motorbike density approaches Saigon levels.
Halong Bay overnight — Hanoi → Halong / Tuan Chau cruise terminal (165 km, 2.5h via expressway). Most travelers do a 2D1N cruise and return Day 2; book a round-trip with driver, or a one-way car with driver to the cruise terminal plus return pickup.
Sapa overnight / Ha Giang loop — Hanoi → Sapa (315 km, ~6h via CT05 expressway). Increasingly popular as a self-drive route for experienced international drivers; a car-with-driver works just as well and lets you sleep during the 6-hour night drive. Ha Giang loop is 300 km of mountain roads usually done over 3 days.
Ninh Binh day trip — often called "Halong Bay on land." Trang An, Tam Coc boat tours, Mua Cave viewpoint. 90 km south of Hanoi (2h drive), easy day trip for self-drive or with driver.
Driving in Hanoi — what to know
Hanoi driving has rules that Saigon doesn't. Ignoring them is expensive.
- Traffic lights are enforced in Hanoi more strictly than in Saigon. Running a red costs ~VND 4-6 million plus license suspension. Camera enforcement is active on major roads.
- Bus lanes are real — the dedicated BRT lane on Le Van Luong / Giang Vo is for buses only. Driving in it during the wrong hours earns automatic fines via camera.
- Odd-even license plate restrictions apply to certain districts during certain events — check advisories on Vietnamese news when you arrive. Your rental contract will note any active restrictions.
- Winter fog (Dec-Feb) can drop visibility to 50m near Noi Bai Airport some mornings. Fog lights are legally required during reduced visibility.
- Hanoi drivers signal lane changes — a habit Saigon drivers don't share. Mirror-check before lane changes is more important here because the expectation is actually there.
- Noi Bai Airport arrivals curb is limited to 3 minutes; for longer waits use the short-term car park (first 15 min free, VND 25,000/hour thereafter).
If you're arriving in winter (Dec-Feb), request a vehicle with proven cabin heater — Hanoi's cold can be brutal in January, and older sedans sometimes have marginal heaters.
Popular routes from Hanoi
The five highest-demand routes from Hanoi:
- Hanoi → Halong Bay / Ha Long (165 km, ~2.5h via CT04 expressway). Cruise terminal at Tuan Chau or Bai Chay port. Standard day or overnight.
- Hanoi → Sapa (315 km, ~6h via CT05 expressway). Mountain destination, rice terraces, hill tribe culture. 2D1N or 3D2N typical.
- Hanoi → Ninh Binh (90 km, ~2h). "Halong on land." Trang An, Tam Coc, Bai Dinh Pagoda. Easy day trip.
- Hanoi → Mai Chau (135 km, ~3h). White Thai hill tribe village, rice paddies, homestays. Alternative to Sapa without the bus loads.
- Hanoi → Ha Giang (300 km, ~7h). Northernmost province, motorcycle country, UNESCO Global Geopark. 3-day loop recommended.
We offer one-way drop-off at Danang and HCMC airports for clients combining northern and central Vietnam — book 7 days ahead for zero repositioning fee.
Best time to visit
Hanoi has genuine four seasons — quite different from the tropical south.
- Sept-Nov: best time to visit. Dry, cool (18-28°C), clear skies. Mid-Autumn Festival (Sep/Oct) is a cultural highlight.
- Dec-Feb: winter, 10-20°C, often grey and damp with "phùn" drizzle. Book a car with a proven heater. Tết 2026 is Jan 29 - Feb 4 — plan around it.
- March-April: transitional, warming rapidly, occasional fog and humidity.
- May-Aug: hot and humid, 28-37°C. Afternoon thunderstorms common. Sapa and Ha Giang are green and alive; good season for those trips despite lowland heat.
Halong Bay is best Oct-April; July-August can see typhoon cancellations. Sapa is most dramatic Sept-Oct (rice terrace harvest) and Feb (cherry blossoms).

Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners legally drive in Vietnam?+
Yes, foreigners can legally drive in Vietnam with an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention plus your original home-country driver's license. Both documents must be carried while driving.
IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention (common in the US, Canada, Australia) are technically not recognized by Vietnamese law, but are accepted in practice by most police checkpoints and rental companies for short-term visitors. If you're staying more than 3 months, you should convert to a Vietnamese license.
For complete safety — especially if your IDP is Geneva-only — we recommend our car-with-driver service, which sidesteps the licensing question entirely.
Is insurance included in the rental price?+
Yes. Every Rocket Car Rentals vehicle includes:
- Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with a maximum deductible of VND 5,000,000 (~USD 200)
- Third-party liability up to VND 150,000,000 (~USD 6,000)
- Passenger accident insurance up to VND 50,000,000 per seat
The policy does not cover: tire damage on sharp objects, undercarriage damage from flooding, damage caused under the influence of alcohol, or damage during unauthorized driver use.
For extra peace of mind, we offer zero-deductible CDW upgrade at USD 5/day.
What is the fuel policy?+
"Same level in, same level out" — you receive the car with a full (or specified) fuel level and return it at the same level. If returned with less fuel, we charge the difference plus a VND 100,000 refuel service fee.
Most of our fleet runs on RON 95 gasoline (~VND 24,000/L). Diesel vehicles are available on request. Electric vehicles (Tesla Model 3, VinFast VF8) are available in HCMC and Hanoi only — charging is included in the rental rate.
Is there a mileage limit?+
Self-drive rentals: 300 km/day included; excess is charged VND 5,000/km (~USD 0.20/km).
With-driver rentals: 80 km/day included within the assigned city; beyond that or for intercity routes, pricing is calculated as a flat route price (see our Routes page or request a quote).
Long-term rentals (7+ days): 2,000 km/week included, excess VND 4,000/km.
Mileage is tracked via odometer photos at pickup and return. No GPS spying — we only check at endpoints.
How much is the security deposit?+
Self-drive deposits (refunded at return):
- Compact sedan: USD 300
- Mid-size SUV: USD 400
- 7-seater / luxury: USD 500
- Electric vehicles: USD 600
Payment methods for deposit:
- Credit card hold (most popular — no cash movement; released automatically at return)
- Bank transfer in VND
- Cash in USD or VND (receipt provided)
With-driver rentals: no deposit required.
What is the cancellation policy?+
- Cancel 24+ hours before pickup: full refund.
- Cancel 12-24 hours before: 50% refund.
- Cancel less than 12 hours before: no refund (we've already blocked the vehicle and driver).
- No-show at pickup: no refund.
Exception: weather emergencies (typhoon, flood closing roads) are handled case-by-case — typically full refund or free reschedule.
Rescheduling within 24 hours is free if the new dates have availability.
What are the age requirements?+
Self-drive: minimum age 21, maximum age 70. Drivers aged 21-24 pay a young-driver surcharge of USD 5/day.
With-driver rentals: no passenger age requirement — infants welcome with our provided child seats (complimentary).
Driver must hold: valid IDP (1968 Vienna) + original license held for 1+ year.
What payment methods do you accept?+
We accept:
- Credit/debit card: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex (via PayPal)
- PayPal (USD billing)
- Bank transfer: Vietnamese VND (VCB, Techcombank, BIDV)
- Cash: USD or VND (at branch pickup only)
VAT invoice issued automatically for all payments over USD 100; request specific billing details at booking time.
Are child seats available?+
Yes — child seats and booster seats are complimentary for both self-drive and with-driver rentals. Request them at booking time.
Available types:
- Infant seat (0-9 kg)
- Toddler seat (9-18 kg, 9 months - 4 years)
- Booster seat (18-36 kg, 4-12 years)
All seats comply with ECE R44/04 standards.
Do you provide roadside assistance?+
Yes — 24/7 English-speaking hotline for all rentals. Our network covers the HCMC, Hanoi, Da Nang metro areas directly; for incidents in other provinces, we coordinate with local partners (typically 30-90 minute response time).
Included free:
- Flat tire change
- Dead battery jump-start
- Lock-out assistance (up to 2 per rental)
- Fuel delivery (up to 5L)
Towing to nearest service center is included for mechanical breakdowns; if the fault is driver-caused (crash), towing fees apply.
What happens if I get a traffic fine?+
Traffic fines in Vietnam are issued either on the spot (by police) or via camera (mailed weeks later).
On-the-spot fines: you pay directly to the officer and keep the receipt. Our team can help interpret the law if needed via WhatsApp.
Camera fines: delivered to the registered vehicle owner (us). We'll contact you with the fine details — you pay the amount directly. If not paid, it's deducted from your deposit plus a VND 200,000 admin fee.
Common automatic camera offenses: speeding, running red lights, entering restricted lanes. Drive defensively.
What if my rental car breaks down mid-trip?+
Call our 24/7 hotline first — WhatsApp or phone. Mechanical failures not caused by driver actions are our responsibility.
Standard response:
- Diagnose remotely if possible.
- Dispatch a replacement vehicle if the issue is beyond roadside repair (typically 30-90 min to nearest metro; longer in remote areas).
- Full refund of unused rental days OR schedule extension if breakdown delays your trip.
Not covered: damage caused by driver (flooding under-carriage, hitting curbs, accidents). In these cases, we dispatch a tow and coordinate with insurance.
