Da Nang is central Vietnam's tourism engine and arguably the easiest Vietnamese city to drive in. Wide roads, disciplined traffic (vs. HCMC/Hanoi standards), clear signage, and a compact layout between My Khe beach, the Han River, and the international airport (DAD) make it attractive for first-time Vietnam drivers with an IDP.
Renting a car in Da Nang unlocks the "Central Vietnam triangle" — Da Nang, Hoi An (30 km south), Hue (95 km north via Hai Van Pass), and the UNESCO-listed My Son sanctuary (40 km southwest). Most travelers combine these in a 3-5 day itinerary. Our branch is at a 15-minute drive from DAD airport, and we service airport arrivals 24/7.
For self-drive: Da Nang is the best Vietnamese city to start with if you've never driven in Vietnam before. The Hai Van Pass road (recently upgraded) is a genuinely spectacular drive — think Amalfi Coast with better surface. For chauffeur: we have Hoi An and Hue-specialist drivers who know every alley and viewpoint.

Top attractions in Da Nang
Five primary use cases for car rental in Da Nang:
Beach + city — My Khe Beach (Forbes top 6 beaches in Asia), Marble Mountains, Dragon Bridge. 2-3 day coverage by walking/cycling plus one day with car. Half-day chauffeur recommended for Marble Mountains + Linh Ung Pagoda at Son Tra.
Hoi An day trip or overnight — 30 km south, 45 minutes. Hoi An's walled Ancient Town (UNESCO) is pedestrian-only inside; park at designated lots and walk. Evening lantern experience is best Oct-Nov when the river is high.
Hue day trip — 95 km north via the Hai Van Pass + Lang Co beach. 2.5 hours each way with photo stops. Imperial Citadel, Thien Mu Pagoda, royal tombs (Tu Duc, Minh Mang, Khai Dinh).
Ba Na Hills — 35 km west, the Sun World mountain theme park with the Golden Bridge and French village. Full day, typically 8 AM departure. Cable car ticket separate (~USD 32).
My Son Sanctuary — 40 km southwest, UNESCO Hindu temple ruins (4th-14th century Cham Kingdom). Half-day trip, best early morning before heat.
Driving in Da Nang — what to know
Da Nang driving is notably more relaxed than Hanoi or HCMC. A few locals:
- Expect lane discipline — cars mostly stay in lanes on Da Nang streets, a habit the other big cities lack. Use your turn signal.
- Hai Van Pass has motorbikes — hundreds daily on rental trips from Hoi An. Pass only on straight sections with visibility; the road is scenic but two-lane.
- Dragon Bridge breathes fire on Saturdays and Sundays at 9 PM — traffic is closed 15 minutes before. Plan around it or enjoy the show.
- Parking in Hoi An is at designated lots outside the Ancient Town walls (20,000-30,000 VND). Don't try to drive into the walled area.
- Speed cameras on QL1A (national highway 1) between Da Nang and Hue — speed limit is 60 km/h in residential stretches, 80 km/h elsewhere. Fines are automatic and retrieved against your rental deposit.
- Da Nang has both DAD airport and Tien Sa seaport — confirm which if meeting a traveler; they're 15 km apart.

Best time to visit
Da Nang has a distinct dry season and wet season:
- Feb-May: best overall. Dry, warm (24-30°C), ocean calm. Post-Tết until early summer is the sweet spot.
- Jun-Aug: hot and dry (31-36°C), beach weather but scorching midday. Good for early-morning sightseeing.
- Sep-Nov: wet season with some typhoon risk Oct-Nov. October in particular can see flooding in Hoi An (historic Ancient Town is sometimes knee-deep in water). Monitor weather before booking.
- Dec-Jan: cool and damp (19-24°C), drizzle common. Ocean less attractive but still visitable.
Tết 2026 (Jan 29 - Feb 4): most domestic travel spike. Hoi An lantern evenings are peak tourist load.

Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners legally drive in Vietnam?+
Yes, foreigners can legally drive in Vietnam with an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention plus your original home-country driver's license. Both documents must be carried while driving.
IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention (common in the US, Canada, Australia) are technically not recognized by Vietnamese law, but are accepted in practice by most police checkpoints and rental companies for short-term visitors. If you're staying more than 3 months, you should convert to a Vietnamese license.
For complete safety — especially if your IDP is Geneva-only — we recommend our car-with-driver service, which sidesteps the licensing question entirely.
Is insurance included in the rental price?+
Yes. Every Rocket Car Rentals vehicle includes:
- Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with a maximum deductible of VND 5,000,000 (~USD 200)
- Third-party liability up to VND 150,000,000 (~USD 6,000)
- Passenger accident insurance up to VND 50,000,000 per seat
The policy does not cover: tire damage on sharp objects, undercarriage damage from flooding, damage caused under the influence of alcohol, or damage during unauthorized driver use.
For extra peace of mind, we offer zero-deductible CDW upgrade at USD 5/day.
What is the fuel policy?+
"Same level in, same level out" — you receive the car with a full (or specified) fuel level and return it at the same level. If returned with less fuel, we charge the difference plus a VND 100,000 refuel service fee.
Most of our fleet runs on RON 95 gasoline (~VND 24,000/L). Diesel vehicles are available on request. Electric vehicles (Tesla Model 3, VinFast VF8) are available in HCMC and Hanoi only — charging is included in the rental rate.
Is there a mileage limit?+
Self-drive rentals: 300 km/day included; excess is charged VND 5,000/km (~USD 0.20/km).
With-driver rentals: 80 km/day included within the assigned city; beyond that or for intercity routes, pricing is calculated as a flat route price (see our Routes page or request a quote).
Long-term rentals (7+ days): 2,000 km/week included, excess VND 4,000/km.
Mileage is tracked via odometer photos at pickup and return. No GPS spying — we only check at endpoints.
How much is the security deposit?+
Self-drive deposits (refunded at return):
- Compact sedan: USD 300
- Mid-size SUV: USD 400
- 7-seater / luxury: USD 500
- Electric vehicles: USD 600
Payment methods for deposit:
- Credit card hold (most popular — no cash movement; released automatically at return)
- Bank transfer in VND
- Cash in USD or VND (receipt provided)

What is the cancellation policy?+

- Cancel 12-24 hours before: 50% refund.
- Cancel less than 12 hours before: no refund (we've already blocked the vehicle and driver).
- No-show at pickup: no refund.
Exception: weather emergencies (typhoon, flood closing roads) are handled case-by-case — typically full refund or free reschedule.
Rescheduling within 24 hours is free if the new dates have availability.
What are the age requirements?+
Self-drive: minimum age 21, maximum age 70. Drivers aged 21-24 pay a young-driver surcharge of USD 5/day.

Driver must hold: valid IDP (1968 Vienna) + original license held for 1+ year.
What payment methods do you accept?+

- PayPal (USD billing)
- Bank transfer: Vietnamese VND (VCB, Techcombank, BIDV)
- Cash: USD or VND (at branch pickup only)

Do you provide roadside assistance?+
Yes — 24/7 English-speaking hotline for all rentals. Our network covers the HCMC, Hanoi, Da Nang metro areas directly; for incidents in other provinces, we coordinate with local partners (typically 30-90 minute response time).
Included free:
- Flat tire change
- Dead battery jump-start
- Lock-out assistance (up to 2 per rental)
- Fuel delivery (up to 5L)
Towing to nearest service center is included for mechanical breakdowns; if the fault is driver-caused (crash), towing fees apply.
What happens if I get a traffic fine?+
Traffic fines in Vietnam are issued either on the spot (by police) or via camera (mailed weeks later).
On-the-spot fines: you pay directly to the officer and keep the receipt. Our team can help interpret the law if needed via WhatsApp.
Camera fines: delivered to the registered vehicle owner (us). We'll contact you with the fine details — you pay the amount directly. If not paid, it's deducted from your deposit plus a VND 200,000 admin fee.
Common automatic camera offenses: speeding, running red lights, entering restricted lanes. Drive defensively.
What if my rental car breaks down mid-trip?+
Call our 24/7 hotline first — WhatsApp or phone. Mechanical failures not caused by driver actions are our responsibility.
Standard response:
- Diagnose remotely if possible.
- Dispatch a replacement vehicle if the issue is beyond roadside repair (typically 30-90 min to nearest metro; longer in remote areas).
- Full refund of unused rental days OR schedule extension if breakdown delays your trip.
Not covered: damage caused by driver (flooding under-carriage, hitting curbs, accidents). In these cases, we dispatch a tow and coordinate with insurance.
