Car Rental in Hoi An — Ancient Town & Central Vietnam Base

UNESCO heritage ancient town, tailor shops, and lantern-lit riverside dinners — 30 min from Da Nang Airport.

Hoi An is the best-preserved historic trading port in Southeast Asia — a UNESCO World Heritage site where 15th-19th century merchant houses, assembly halls, and Japanese covered bridges survive in a walkable 2-km² old town. By day it's a maze of yellow-washed shops; by night, silk lanterns turn it into one of Vietnam's most photographed cityscapes.

Hoi An itself is a no-car zone inside the Ancient Town — vehicles are restricted to the outer ring road (An Hoi bridge, Hai Ba Trung). Most travelers arrive by car from Da Nang Airport (DAD, 30 km / 45 min), park at a designated lot, and walk or rent a bicycle for 20,000 VND/day. A rental car is genuinely useful for day trips from Hoi An — My Son Sanctuary (40 km), Marble Mountains (25 km), Hue (120 km via Hai Van Pass), or the underrated An Bang beach (5 km).

Rocket Car Rentals does not have a branch inside Hoi An itself — our nearest branch is Da Nang. For Hoi An rentals we operate a delivery model: the car is delivered to your hotel (inside or outside the old town) at no extra cost for rentals of 3+ days. Most clients book a Da Nang airport pickup + onward drive to Hoi An as one seamless transfer.

Top attractions in Hoi An

Hoi An trip patterns break down into four uses:

Ancient Town exploration — car not needed inside. Walkable in 2 hours superficially, 2 days properly. Must-see: Japanese Covered Bridge, Tan Ky House, Cantonese Assembly Hall, silk tailors on Nguyen Thai Hoc.

My Son Sanctuary day trip — 40 km southwest, UNESCO Hindu temple complex (4th-14th century Cham Kingdom). Best early morning before heat. Half-day with driver, USD 45-65 round-trip.

Marble Mountains + Da Nang return — 25 km north toward DAD airport. Combine with Linh Ung Pagoda and Dragon Bridge (weekends 9 PM fire show). Good "last day before flight" itinerary.

An Bang Beach + Cam Thanh coconut village — 5 km east/north. Quieter than Da Nang's My Khe, popular with foodies for fresh seafood. Sunrise runs are magical.

Hue day trip via Hai Van Pass — 120 km north, 2.5h each way. Long day but doable. Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, Thien Mu Pagoda.

Driving in Hoi An — what to know

Hoi An-area driving notes:

  1. No vehicles inside Ancient Town — the walled area (Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Bach Dang streets) is pedestrian-only after 5 PM. Daytime allows bicycles and electric shuttles only.
  2. Parking at the Ancient Town fringe: An Hoi parking lot (south of the river) is the primary paid lot (25,000 VND/car). Outside-wall parking is limited in the evening.
  3. Bicycles everywhere — Hoi An's countryside roads are full of rental bicycles (often 5-wide). Pass patiently.
  4. Flooding risk Oct-Nov — Thu Bon River floods the old town most years. Historic high-water marks on shop walls show it's common. Check weather; some streets become navigable only by boat.
  5. Hai Van Pass + Hai Van Tunnel to Hue — pass adds 45 min + scenery, tunnel is 10 min. Both open to rental cars.
  6. Countryside road width — single-lane roads near Cam Thanh / coconut jungle. Courteous right-of-way expected.

Best time to visit

Hoi An has the classic central-Vietnam climate:

  • Feb-Apr: ideal — dry, 24-28°C, river levels low. Best time for tailor shops + lantern nights.
  • May-Aug: hot and dry (31-36°C). Beach + resort weather but old town exploration tough at noon.
  • Sep-Dec: wet season. October-November floods are common; Ancient Town knee-deep most years. Book refundable hotels in these months.
  • Tết 2026 (Jan 29-Feb 4): packed but festive. Tailor shops close 3 days; lantern festival extends.

Full-moon lantern festival (15th lunar day each month) is the peak Hoi An experience — electricity switched off in Ancient Town 6-10 PM, only silk lanterns.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners legally drive in Vietnam?+

Yes, foreigners can legally drive in Vietnam with a valid original driver's license from their home country, together with identity documents. Both must be carried while driving.

Requirements can vary in practice between police checkpoints and rental companies, so short-term visitors should confirm with us before booking. If you're staying more than 3 months, you should convert to a Vietnamese license.

For complete safety, we recommend our car-with-driver service, which sidesteps the licensing question entirely.

Is insurance included in the rental price?+

Yes. Every Rocket Car Rentals vehicle includes:

  • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with a maximum deductible of VND 5,000,000 (~USD 200)
  • Third-party liability up to VND 150,000,000 (~USD 6,000)
  • Passenger accident insurance up to VND 50,000,000 per seat

The policy does not cover: tire damage on sharp objects, undercarriage damage from flooding, damage caused under the influence of alcohol, or damage during unauthorized driver use.

For extra peace of mind, we offer zero-deductible CDW upgrade at USD 5/day.

What is the fuel policy?+

"Same level in, same level out" — you receive the car with a full (or specified) fuel level and return it at the same level. If returned with less fuel, we charge the difference plus a VND 100,000 refuel service fee.

Most of our fleet runs on RON 95 gasoline (~VND 24,000/L). Diesel vehicles are available on request. Electric vehicles (Tesla Model 3, VinFast VF8) are available in HCMC and Hanoi only — charging is included in the rental rate.

Is there a mileage limit?+

Self-drive rentals: 300 km/day included; excess is charged VND 5,000/km (~USD 0.20/km).

With-driver rentals: 80 km/day included within the assigned city; beyond that or for intercity routes, pricing is calculated as a flat route price (see our Routes page or request a quote).

Long-term rentals (7+ days): 2,000 km/week included, excess VND 4,000/km.

Mileage is tracked via odometer photos at pickup and return. No GPS spying — we only check at endpoints.

How much is the security deposit?+

Self-drive deposits (refunded at return):

  • Compact sedan: USD 300
  • Mid-size SUV: USD 400
  • 7-seater / luxury: USD 500
  • Electric vehicles: USD 600

Payment methods for deposit:

  • Credit card hold (most popular — no cash movement; released automatically at return)
  • Bank transfer in VND
  • Cash in USD or VND (receipt provided)

With-driver rentals: no deposit required.

What is the cancellation policy?+
  • Cancel 24+ hours before pickup: full refund.
  • Cancel 12-24 hours before: 50% refund.
  • Cancel less than 12 hours before: no refund (we've already blocked the vehicle and driver).
  • No-show at pickup: no refund.

Exception: weather emergencies (typhoon, flood closing roads) are handled case-by-case — typically full refund or free reschedule.

Rescheduling within 24 hours is free if the new dates have availability.

What are the age requirements?+

Self-drive: minimum age 21, maximum age 70. Drivers aged 21-24 pay a young-driver surcharge of USD 5/day.

With-driver rentals: no passenger age requirement — infants welcome with our provided child seats (complimentary).

Driver must hold: valid original driver's license held for 1+ year.

What payment methods do you accept?+

We accept:

  • Credit/debit card: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex (via PayPal)
  • PayPal (USD billing)
  • Bank transfer: Vietnamese VND (VCB, Techcombank, BIDV)
  • Cash: USD or VND (at branch pickup only)

VAT invoice issued automatically for all payments over USD 100; request specific billing details at booking time.

Are child seats available?+

Yes — child seats and booster seats are complimentary for both self-drive and with-driver rentals. Request them at booking time.

Available types:

  • Infant seat (0-9 kg)
  • Toddler seat (9-18 kg, 9 months - 4 years)
  • Booster seat (18-36 kg, 4-12 years)

All seats comply with ECE R44/04 standards.

Do you provide roadside assistance?+

Yes — 24/7 English-speaking hotline for all rentals. Our network covers the HCMC, Hanoi, Da Nang metro areas directly; for incidents in other provinces, we coordinate with local partners (typically 30-90 minute response time).

Included free:

  • Flat tire change
  • Dead battery jump-start
  • Lock-out assistance (up to 2 per rental)
  • Fuel delivery (up to 5L)

Towing to nearest service center is included for mechanical breakdowns; if the fault is driver-caused (crash), towing fees apply.

What happens if I get a traffic fine?+

Traffic fines in Vietnam are issued either on the spot (by police) or via camera (mailed weeks later).

On-the-spot fines: you pay directly to the officer and keep the receipt. Our team can help interpret the law if needed via WhatsApp.

Camera fines: delivered to the registered vehicle owner (us). We'll contact you with the fine details — you pay the amount directly. If not paid, it's deducted from your deposit plus a VND 200,000 admin fee.

Common automatic camera offenses: speeding, running red lights, entering restricted lanes. Drive defensively.

What if my rental car breaks down mid-trip?+

Call our 24/7 hotline first — WhatsApp or phone. Mechanical failures not caused by driver actions are our responsibility.

Standard response:

  1. Diagnose remotely if possible.
  2. Dispatch a replacement vehicle if the issue is beyond roadside repair (typically 30-90 min to nearest metro; longer in remote areas).
  3. Full refund of unused rental days OR schedule extension if breakdown delays your trip.

Not covered: damage caused by driver (flooding under-carriage, hitting curbs, accidents). In these cases, we dispatch a tow and coordinate with insurance.
